Ported vs Sealed

They are sealed now and im not hitting the lows that I want.


Im still trying to find the paperwork for them. Im hoping it'll tell me how big of a port to go with.

no offence dude, but there sony subs, your not gonna hit every note perfect with them. thats why there so cheap.

just keep in mind that you probably wont like them ported.

I agree. You're not going to get a $30 sub to put out like a $300 sub will. You will only get so much. If you want more output, I highly suggest investing in JL Audio subs. You can get the bottom of the line JL's ( About $75 for a 12)and they will still put out like a high end sub and with very good clarity.

jl, pioneer, rockford fosgate, phoenix gold, jbl, mb quart, all them make decent subs for cheap.

mb quart on the very bottom of the list, and with phoenix gold, dont get there ryval series, its garbage

any of the other ones listed will work out real nice for ya.

I pretty much just picked up what I could afford. Im hoping somewhere down the road of getting a couple of 8s in a professionally built box (or just learn how to build a good box) and have them in between bucket seats whenever I get around to buying them.


If I don't like the ports ill probably end up building two new boxes that are a little wider for more airspace

Here are a couple boxes I have built....
This one was done back in 97 for a show truck

A buddy's camaro I did...

This one I did for my B2 I had back in 2000...

Here I swapped the radio and HVAC controls so the HU had more room to cool off from the hot metal dash

Here is a box I built for my lowrider ranger back in 2002, after building the box I added ports to it later, which is what I was doing here, came out wrong and I made mistakes on this box, which is why the ports are angled into the box, wasn't happy with the way it sounded and it came out less than a week after install...

There's the box that I have now. Two separate enclosures connected with a little storage area for bags for my paper route.
Ported or not im separating the enclosures and building a shelf to sit on top.

Pre-fab boxes are not built to any sub's specs...You would do just as good screwing the sub to a board and putting it behind your seat...

If I remember correctly Sony designed their lower end subs to be open air subs, they will hit better with a properly ported box, But I wouldnt get insane with them. when you start with the porting start small, you can always make the hole bigger, you can almost never make it smaller. Sony has two different lines, the basic walmart stuff which is ok and their competition line. So knowing that, understand that your subs will have limitations. But its all in the amp tuning and head unit tuning as well. I would use what you got and have the amp tuned.

Finally found the paperwork. It says they recommend sealed, but with twice the airspace that my boxes already are. Im pretty much at my limit size wise for the boxes since I have a regular cab (my dad can barely buckle his seat belt and my taller friends tend to break my dash vents.....). Would airspace matter if I go ported? They say to use a 3in port.

You could try putting some poly fill in you boxes. It makes the sub think that the box is bigger than it actually is.

You can always find more airspace for the box, and without moving the seat forward....I had a guy tell me there was no way I could fit a box for 4 10's with the correct airspace in my 88 reg cab ranger without going into the bed...so I told him put his money where his mouth was....2 weeks later I came back with a box in the truck with the correct amount of airspace for 12 10's...He couldn't believe it, even broke out a tape measure to figure it out It all depends on how much time you spend on designing and building the box...
