My starter went bad on me a while back and I ended up pop starting my truck. As soon as it started, a bunch of smoke came from under my truck, it wasn't running on all cylinders (this cleared up after about 5 seconds), and I had a pretty loud clicking sound for about 5 miles that was consistent with engine RPM. What do you think happened here?

wow, that is kinda weird.Pop start my ranger all the time and no problem, maybe the starter was stuck in?

If it sat without running for a while.....

Fuel pressure bled off, making the sputtering. Try turning the key to Run/then off 3X before cranking it / catching it in gear (in your case).

Oil pressurizes the lifters; they also likely bled down, making the valves clatter.

Should clear right up after running for a couple minutes.

Well that's what is funny about it. The starter had a bad connection so every couple of starts I would have to pop it. I had driven it to work that morning, I got out at night to leave and no go. So I popped it. Never had this happen before. Weird.
