Hi
I bought a 2005 Ranger a few months ago, and I'm just now getting used to it. It's a FX4 level 2, with stock wheels, tires, diff, etc. and 4.0 V6 and 5spd Auto. The PO kept immaculate care of it, doing all the work at the dealer. It has 140,000 kms.
Now, my old truck was a Nissan 2WD with 2.4 I4. At low rpm (under 3000) the Ranger is clearly WAY more power. BUT, accelerating up a hill at say 80-100 kph, the Nissan used to gear down to 4000+ RPM and really fly. The Ranger doesn't want to gear down enough to get over maybe 3000 RPM and at that it's more gutless than the Nissan (the 500+ lb of extra weight in the 4WD might have something to do with it...). If I gear down manually to 2nd I can get 4000+ and it does seem to have lots of power there.
So: First I guess I need to get the auto tranny looked at: is it normal to have it not gear down, even with the throttle floored? It's called "5 speed", but there's an OD, D, 2, and 1 - that makes 4 in my counting.
Second: does this engine have a lot of power compared to a 2.4L 4cyl? Should I be looking at the engine to see why it doesn't have the power? It starts easily and idles nicely, but it gets HORRENDOUS fuel economy compared to the Nissan. (maybe 7.5 km/l hy, 5 km/l city)
Oh: I also just added a "cat-back" high-flow exhaust. Had one on the Nissan as well. Didn't seem to make much difference in the Ranger.
Any pointers?
