I am getting about 12 miles per gallon out of my 2.9. The motor is rebuilt with 25.000 miles on it. Just done a tuneup with high grade wires cap and rotor and plugs. exhaust new muffler and exhaust from manifold down. original cat though. Wondering what I can can do for better gas mileage and performance?

ps motor is from an 89

Are you using the ECM from the 89'? or the 86'? (presuming truck info)
Is there a EGR valve on the engine?

maybe a vacuum leak?? timing set correct?

Thanks

Thank you guys! Lot to look at here and learn! Guess I need to start tinkering again to get it just right!

ps egr valve replaced. Motor was replaced by another guy, ecm was shot so he had new one oput in, I am assuming it is correct for motor. How can I tell?

I still need to have timing checked.

What kinda MPG's were you getting after the engine swap? was it better than earlier posted? or was this always down on mpgs after the engine swap?

there is a serial # on the ECM it's self....after 88' there wasn't EGR's placed on 2.9s. but it seems like your "guy" swapped the EGR to your newer engine. After a engine swap often that is a detail that is missed and causes run-ability issues. that may not be your case though.

as Original_Ranger84 mentioned....all good things to check....especially grounds

OOps

My mistake, I replaced the pcv valve, not the egr I am learning patience please! I do not know if there is an egr on the motor will have to check. I do need timing checked, and probably looking at a new cat.

Jeremy

PS I didn't run the old motor long enough to check mileage. Pretty much changed it out after I got it. Very well could have put the egr on from the 86 motor. If it is there should I remove it?

PSS Original ranger 84 I am assuming you are speaking of oxygen sensor?
