Getting ready to try and get through another NYS Inspection. My handheld scanner detected PO401 code, EGR insufficeient recirculation flow.
However, my CEL has not come on (YET)
I have a couple of questions. Since my CEL is not on, what are my chances of inspection the inspection ?
Could this be caused my an exhaust leak ? Maybe not enough back pressure? For the last six months or so my exhaust has been getting louder and louder. Something is obviously rusted away. But it was also leaking like this (although it is a bit worse now) during last year's inspection and it passed okay.
Thanks all

Exhaust leaks should be an automatic fail.

It could be the leak, a plugged EGR tube, bad EGR sensor, or vacuum hoses to the sensor.

i used to work at an inspection station , if the code pops up the light should come on fairly soon , you can reset it and hope the computer runs that as one of the last tests. For inspection in New York a 1999 or older vehicle can have 2 unrun monitors , 2000 or newer can only have 1 unrun , if the light comes on clear it then drive the distance from you home to the shop+xx miles to make it 50 and hope it does not come back on

Nope, not in NY State. They can stop me driving if one of my license plate bulbs is out but they realy don't care if my wife, my kids, and my dog all die of carbon monixide poisoning

Hey thanks! I think I may have it licked anyway. I finally worked my way down to the DPFE sensor in my trouble shooting. Seems that Ford trucks and the Taurus have chronic problems with this item. The more reading I did the more I found that the EGR valve itself was one of the most reliable things in the system.
