I have a 1997 ranger 4.0. My truck runs fine and does not skip but I keep getting these codes po171&174. I have searched for hours and fought this problem for over a year and it seems to get worse in cold weather. Wondering if i need to bite the bullet and replace the upper and lower intake gaskets. I am trying to make sure it isn't something simple first though any help is appreciated. Thanks Shane.

It's not that bad of a job, weather permitting. I recommend removing the hood and sitting on a piece of foam to do it.

Your problem is the gasket between the fuel rail and the lower intake. As noted, not too terrible of a job. I have a write up on how to do the upper engine gaskets, and if you do not need to do your valve cover gaskets, your job will be a whole lot simpler. you will have to remove the upper intake which can be a pain especially if you have a rusty egr valve... then when that is off, just remove the fuel rail and replace the gasket.

There is a TSB out for this problem, what happens is the fuel rail gasket tears between the intake ports and then it throws the codes you are getting. this was a problem only on the 97 model year 4.0's.

I took care of mine when I did the valve covers which were leaking, and since I had to take most of that off anyways, I decided to do a pre-emptive strike on it and do mine while I had it apart.

If you do change them on the truck instead of taking out the whole lower intake, removing the hood and sitting on a large piece of foam as suggested by Earl43P is a pretty good idea.

Here is the link to my walk-through on the gaskets. remember, if you are just doing the fuel rail gaskets, it is not too hard at all.

Hope this helps!

Awesome I definitly have to do this so I can pass the emmissions test. I did clean the MAF and it didn't work. Thanks Shane.
