It's a seatbelt pre-tensioner. It works in conjunction with the airbag system. However, unlike an airbag...it won't explode. In the event of an accident, it actually puts more tension into the seat belt to be sure that you're held in tightly.

You can probably unplug it, but you're going to have an airbag light flashing at you from that point on. There probably isn't a way around this unless you can find a way to mount the new seats to the old seat tracks and keep it in the system.

Just because it won't explode like an airbag, it is still a charged object that could be triggered to retract while you're holding it if you're not careful. This could (and probably would) create a pretty good injury. Be careful if you're going to handle it.

Actually mounting the new seats to the old seat tracks is prolly the best way possible anyways. APC seats should be built to mount to any seat track for just that reason.

Listen to this part especially. Unplugging ANY part of the airbag system without a proper de-powering can (allegedly and according to ALL manufacturers) send a surge through the system and set off the airbag.

Now, get us up some pics of that Vette.
