Plugged oil pickup screen?

I've heard a couple claims that it's possible, although have never actually seen it done. But as a general rule on the 4.0, the engine's gotta come up to completely pull off the oil pan.

Good evening,

What symptoms are you getting that would make you look at the oil pick up screen?

I've had that ticking/knocking noise for quite awhile and now my oil pressure drops off to 0-10 at idle when warm. Truck has 86,000 miles.

So, do you think it could be done by un bolting the engine and lifting it up with a puller or a jack under the tranny?

jack up the motor put a 2x4 in between the motor and motor mount, on each side lower the motor on to the 2x4s and that should give you the clearance you are lookin for to get the pan off. you want the motor up 4''. are u sure your oil filter isent the problem. what kind of filter are you running?

I cannot see a clogged or partially clogged screen causing that exact problem.. Seems a clogged screen would possibly lower the pressure when more oil is needed as in high rpm..
I would agree with the filter possbility. Or even a bypass valve hung open or partially open in the pump itself. If you do pull the pan make sure to replace the pump with a new one.

Well, that makes sense. I've not been very nice to my motor and have had to put alot of things before it. I'm using a Napa Gold filter and Valvoline 5-30 and it's been quite awhile since I changed the oil. Maybe a few changes in a short period of time will help?

Jim I don't know where you live... But here in central TExas I'd change the filter for another brand and install straight 30 weight oil in it and see if that Valvoline was hanging in the 5 range and not getting up to 30 where it belongs..
The only reason to run variable rate oil is dependant on how cold the vehicle oil gets when not running. Around here 30 weight is good all the year.

Don't run straight 30W.

Hopefully you are checking the other possibilities of the Rangers mysterious knock, the same reason I logged into this site. There are several good (some not) threads in this site that will assist you in pinpointing a problem without throwing away good parts. It helped me.

Now, hopefully, you don't have a serious problem with the lubrication system. You might but let's start from scratch

92 takes 10W-30, not 5W-30. But this will behave EXACTLY THE SAME as SAE30 when the engine is warm. It's not your problem.

Spec is at 2000 RPM, not idle, though it's probably low given that idle pressure.

It's conceivable that there is a problem with the pump or pressure relief valve, but two much more likely problems are:

1. Fouled oil. Oil naturally accumulates water and other combustion products as it is used. Some problems make it a lot worse (say, very rich mixtures will fill it with raw gasoline).

2. Wide oil clearances. This just means you need a rebuild. Nothing else really works.

Well, Napa had an oil change deal going on, 11.99 for oil and filter so I took advantage of it. The first two changes I used a quart of CRC engine flush and then two more changes after that, all included filter. After a test drive, the low oil pressure problem is gone but still have the 2000 RPM rattle, I'll save that for another day. Even though the engine compartment said 5-30, I checked the book and it said 10-30, like MAKG said. I will go with the 10-30 next weekend but what oil and filter do you recommend? Oh, after telling my father-in-law the situation, he chewed me out for not changing my oil!

Just for conversation let's add Murphy to the equation.

Electric gauge. Is what he is seeing, really what he is seeing?

Tiger owners for years have suffered from inaccurate readings from our british electrical systems. Whenever there is doubt, mechanical gauges give us a real picture.

With my 162,000 94 XLT whenever I change the oil I always listen for that reassuring sound of the oil filter filling and pressurizing at start up. If he has that he may just be chasing a ghost by pulling the pan.

Disregard, sounds like he fixed it. Clogged electrical gauge relay.

Good job
