Ok, so I am about ready to start the V8 portion of my Ranger rebuild. I have the wiring portion pretty much figured out, just need to actually do some testing to make sure it is going to work, but I can handle that. I’m ready to start collecting the parts I’ll need to do the swap, and feel like I am forgetting something I need. I’d like to run my list by y’all, and get your input on preferred components (from the needed list) and anything I might be missing.

EDIT: This will be a 5.0 EFI swap, not doing carb.

What I already have:
• 1986 Ranger SWB (former 2.9L manual, currently no drive train)
• 1998 Explorer V8 (complete, running, roll-over victim) donating:
o Chassis & Engine wiring harness (please don’t ask)
o Engine (obviously)
o Axle, your usual explorer 3L73 8.8”
o Transmission
o PATS already disabled
• L&L Products Motor Mounts (got them cheap, but no mounting instructions)

What I need:
• Double sump oil pan w/dipstick and pickup tube (This one?)
• Remote oil adapter
• Radiator
• E-fan (if mech. won’t fit)
• Fuel System (think BII tank behind axle)
• Power steering lines (Explorer PS pump to Ranger steering box, anything special?)
• A/C components (Ranger system to Explorer compressor?)
• Exhaust (probably retain the Explorer manifolds for now)

I know with my swap I’ll probably just have to work a couple of these out for myself, particularly the Fuel and A/C. I don't expect y'all to do all of my work for me, I am still reading other people's threads and what worked for them. That said I welcome any input as to what I am missing or which parts might work best.

Couple of tips:
The Explorer block has a dipstick hole in the side, so the traditional Ford car doublesump pan and pickup will be fine.
If you plan to lower the truck, that rearend will really limit wheel choice, as it's 3" wider than an '86 rear.
The Explorer mechanical fan should fit with your rad in the stock location.

If I were in your position I would consider carb over EFI. I know I am the one usually touting the virtues of EFI, but since you already have a carb setup it will probably be easier to go carb.

Wasn't aware of that I always assumed that it went into the pan. Thanks for straitening me out on that.

Will be lowering the truck but it won't be much, no where near the ammount that you are. Actually going for 3" front and rear. I'm also using '03-'04 Mustang Mach 1 wheels so I think I'll be ok in that department. Any more on that is for a different thread, but thanks for mentioning it.

Was kinda thinking it would. Makes the job a lot easier for now (not that adding one would be difficult), and I can put that money towards buying the other items.

1986 Ranger 2.9L was EFI
1998 Explorer 5.0L was EFI

You must be reading my sig. That's my 84 that I was originally going to do the swap on, but it is very totaled. I've still got it to pull some parts off of for this build and I'll save the motor for something down the road. I've just never gotten around to updating my signature to reflect my current vehicle status. There is no debate over the Carb vs EFI. I will be going EFI, and suppose I should have mentioned that before as it could affect some parts needed.

Yeah, I was reading your profile.

Yeah, I was reading your profile.

That's cool, just threw me for a loop when I read your post. I should have updated that sig years ago when I totaled that truck. I wish I could do the swap on the 84, mostly because if the family history. But it looks like this now:

There are a few parts on there that I could get some use out of yet.

That's why it hasn't been scrapped yet. Lights, bumpers, grille, wheels, tires, hood, transmission axle all still have a little life left. Maybe the driver side door, the tool box could be reused as well. Main things I want off of it are the engine, and the front and rear sway bars. The 2.8L had less than 5K at the time of the wreck. Might try to part it out a little before I scrap it but there's not much that isn't bent.

Updated shopping list

Ok so I think I've narrowed my component selection down a little.

What I need:
• Double sump oil pan w/dipstick and pickup tube
o Summit Racing Double-Sump Oil Pan
o Double-sump pick-up tube
Melling – or – Summit
o Oil level sender plug (will I need this?)
• Remote oil adapter
o Buy a kit or assemble my own?
• Radiator
o Ranger 4.0L HD
o Coolant hoses from Explorer?
• Fuel System
o BII Tank (based on 410Fortune BII build on Explorer Forums)
• ’90 BII sender w/pump
• Ranger filler neck
• Transfer tank pressure sensor from Explorer tank
o Fuel lines
• New lines needed, sizes?
• Adapter fittings for Ford QDs
• Power steering lines (Explorer PS pump to Ranger steering box, anything special?)
o Have lines made local after engine is installed
• A/C components
o Replace ranger system components
o Adapt to Explorer compressor.
• Exhaust
o Engine back dual with x pipe
o Explorer manifolds
o Modify explorer Y-pipe into down pipes
o Aftermarket bullet cats
o Basic turbo mufflers
o What size pipe? Next motor might be a nice stroker.
