:annoyed:Please help if you're able...My 2001 SOHC 4.0 has run the past 1/4 million miles w/o need of a single repair but yesterday, it backfired once when I started it. On ce started, it ran fine the rest of the day and started many times w/o a problem. This morning I started the truck and once again,it backfired once before starting. However, this time it ran worse than a 50 year old chevy (no offense) and died in the street 1/2 mile from home. Worse, it hasn't started since.
Computer indicated a fault in the right bank anti-knock sensor (?) But nothing else engine wise. Since the break-down, it won't start at all & sounded like it jumper time although I couldn't imagine how. I'm extremely under tooled and find myself admiring the poor for the wealth that they have. If my truck doesn't run, I don't eat.
Any thoughts, or ideas? Even better, this ever happen to you, or someone you know?

Have you checked to see if it blew any vacuum lines off?

In the old days I'da said it jumped time or twisted a distributor gear off.....

ah,the good old days!

That's just how it's popping too. Of course, the machine's too complex for a simple answer now. Isn't progress a wonder thing? I mean, it sure. makes fools wonder if it's progress anyway!

Don't know what exactly caused the problem but...after pulling the fuel &I ignition systems apart, checking each component & putting everything back together, it seems to now work. I guess it just need some attention & a lot of cussing. Appreciate the attempt to help & am sure someone would have eventually figured out the why but, as long as it works I'm not nearly as concerned with why it didn't.

I'm back! Guess my success was premature. Kicked the starter this afternoon &the damned thing back fired once then wouldn't even try to fire. I'm looking for ANY suggestions that don't have me taking the engine apart.

The early years of the SOHC were known for timing chain issues. Those usually start with a rattle under load or at high RPM though.

You may have a fuel pump concern. Low pressure could account for some of your symptoms.

Are you still getting the "knock sensor" code ??? This may be screwing with the "Timing" and advancing it too far, and that may be the reason for the backfire through the Intake,
Read the codes or "pending" codes and tell us what you have...

Gee, borrowed the diagonistic computer from our friends at O'Riley's & reset my ecm by disconnecting the battery. I don't even know what you mean by "pending code", just something new to find enlightenment about at this point. However, resetting the eclipse error codes allowed me to crank it enough to almost start (it cranked, fired, & then backfired) and I came bayck into the house to ponder my problem. It's as if the right bank's out of time but I can't even imagine how that could happen. I had an old ford once that had plastic seats on the cam gear that broke but, this system's chain on metal so that's out.
And now, i've developed a gas leak @ the fuel pump as well. THAT I can deal with, it's just another aggravation. If I didn't really love this truck (not to mention NEED it) I'd use the gas leak to torch it. But that's just frustration fantasies.

Try checking the fuel pressure first - especially with a leak. Fuel pressure tester cost me about $60, but it helps pinpoint or eliminate the fuel system right away.Very handy tool for diagnosing fuel injection. It screws on to the schrader valve, which is usually on your fuel rail (between the upper and lower intake manifolds) and looks like the valve on a bicycle tire. If your pressure is within specs, start looking elsewhere, if not, start with the filter (which is never a waste of money). Also maybe the pump, or the fuel pressure bypass. Youve probably also got an inertia switch, possibly a relay, and the PCM in that system. Happy hunting !
Mine would start, but backfire as it ran out of fuel.

With appreciation for your attempts to assist me in the resolution of my problem, I'd reached the point in which one tends to consider just shooting holes thru your motor &I calling it a repair well finished. I had to sit back from it a bit cause I really DO like my truck. But, it STILL doesn't start & tomorrow I've GOT to try again to fix what's now thought of as 'the bitch' for some reason. So...I'm still seeking suggestions.
