i just bought a 85 ranger 2.8L the oil looks like a milkshake and the level is really low, it doesnt smell sweet like coolant so im thinking it may be fuel. i just want some direction on what it could be, before i start tearing the engine down.... any feedback will help thanks very much.

It ain't fuel!! Milkshake means water.. Drain some out and look at it up close and personal. If it's just dreally dirty it will still be oil.. If there is water in it it will be easy to tell.
Alternatly you can look in the radiator to see if it is low.. If not then most likely it is just dirty oil in there.
Don't tear anything apart till you KNOW FOR CERTAIN what you are gonna do to it..

coolants not all the way to the cap, but its not considerably low. but its gotta be something in the oil, not just dirty

Fill the coolant to the top with the engine cool, drive it awhile and check it when the engine and everything is at the same temp as when you filled it before and see if its at the same level.

okay also another thing...when i took the air filter cover off there was also nasty oil in there too. thinkin its probably pcv valve bad?

Nope thats just a lack of a filter for the PCV valve for when it goes into the filter housing for the gasses that come out of the engine.

Spray some WD-40 down the dipstick hole to clean it out. then run the oil level guage a few times in and out while wiping it do you get A good oil reading. Mine did that also but after I did the valve guide seals it went away. Get a new PCV and breather filter in the air filter housing and see if it clears up. As long as you have good oil pressure you should be alright it is definately a blowby issue if the coolant level stays good. Running some seafoam through the brake booster vacuum hose could help also but if the engine is stock the valve seals are bad. Easy enough to change without pulling the heads using air pressure.
