I recently purchaced a 89 ext cab 4x4 with a 2.9 5 speed i belive is the fm 146 and its electronic 4 wheel drive. It was a one owner truck low miles and little rust and i got it for a steal at 450$ from a kid that knew nothing about trucks. The problem im having is u can put it into any gear and it wont do anything, u can shift without pushing the clutch in and it wont grind. i was thinkin it was the clutch anyone that could shed some light on my situation would be greatley appreciated. also i seen a kit to change the electronic 4x4 to manual and not the little turn knob that bolts on, the one with the cable that bolts into the cab. once again any help will be greatly appreiciated.

Oh how I miss my '89 ranger.... I had the same truck that your describing except I didn't have the shifting problem that you're describing. man I loved that truck!! Now I have an '02 4.0 automatic

need a new clutch or slave cylinder but should do both while the transmission is out

Anyone know who makes that kit to switch it to manual and not that cheap one that looks like a water know the one with the cable and leve that bolts into the cab. also any one eles have any ideas what this could be?

but even if it were in neutral wouldnt it make noise when shiting gear without pressing the clutch? and thanx for the link, that would be nice but its very pricy. be nice if he would drop the price

any other ideas please? i would greatly appreciate it. hopn its a simple fix and not the clutch

I would narrow the problem down. Are you losing any brake fluid evident by low resevoir or fluid dripping from the trans? Are you getting plenty of solid clutch pedal and do you have plenty of good fluid in the trans? If everything else is good but you can't make it move, your transfer is probably in neutral. Check the wires and connections or remove the motor and manually put it in 2, 4 or 4lo.
