hey guys
wel im sad to say another problem has come up in the ranger.
i will describevery thing in case anything has to do with it.
so i went offroading 2 or 3 weeks ago and my alternator went,so i waited 2 weeks got a alternator and installed it today.i was driving the truck around and on my way home the transmission felt like it had went into nuetral.it just reved wont go anywhere.i trie 1 2 overdirve and drive and reverse and nothing.so i shut it off and let it sit for a couple minutes start it back up and it worked for a couple feet then did it again.after that i disconnected the negetive battery terminal and and let it sit put it back on started it and it worked.i got right around the corner from my house and it did it again.so i did the battery thing and it got me home.now im not sure what to do.it was making a weird noise from the transmission,but not a grinding noise.i cant really describe it.should i change the tranny fluid.could that be the problem.please help guys.i dont know where to start .im horrible at transmissions.
its a 1993 ford ranger extended cab 2wd 4 liter engine.112xxx miles on it.

First thing i would do is pull the pan and see whats in it...it sounds like the filter is plugging up and when you shut it off some of the debris is fall off of filter enough so that it will pick the fluid back up and work for a few minutes...if not to much junk in the pan you may get away with changing filter and fluid.
