My tranny is making a noise when I drive in higher rpm like clattering sound
When I was on the highway it got really loud and clunked. I pulled over and found that none of the gears worked I put it in 4 high no gears I put it in 4 low had gears again . got it home replaced the transfercase cause it haughty that was it. Went for a drive had gears but it was clattering still so I thought I got a bad transfercase so I replaced it again. Same thing. So I replaced it with a manual transfercase. Same thing. Got a m5odr1hd on craigslist. Put it in same thing. Clattering in 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th I've been unable to use it for work and have missed 9 days . I really need some info or if anyone else had the same problem please help.
94 mazda b4000 5 speed 4x4
1354 transfer to 1350 manual
M5odr1 to m5odr1 hd out of 03 explorer

A reasonable assumption after all that is that it's probably not the transmission or the transfer case. Did you change the torque converter with the trans ? Is there a problem with the flex plate ? Or is the no gears thing a coincidence and the clatter is coming from somewhere else entirely ? No clatter in first gear could be related to road speed not the gear itself. I'm just guessing here. You could put all four wheels up on stands and have someone run it up till it clatters and try to pinpoint it from there - you gotta get to work !

I pulled the tranny again this morning so I could get at the clutch to see what shape it was in. It worked fine in the truck, but when I lost the gears I thought it might be the problem. But it looks fine plenty of friction material left springs tight pressure plate has some hot spots but not to bad, same for flywheel . All bolts were tight. And I was unable to move the crank ( no slop in thrust bearings). I had the front drive shaft out and the 4x4 mother unplugged when it crapped out on the highway. The only thing wrong with the whole truck is unfortunately a mistery. It's just a clattering noise that is not in time with any thing. It sounds like someone shaking screws in a can at the bell housing but only in 2 3 4 5 when the motor is making power IE about to shift to next gear or up hill or just getting up to speed. And it is apperantly something important. Oh and the pilot shaft bearing was good too. Any one with ideas please help. I was a mechanic for a while and I'm not stupid but I've done everything I can think of and don't know what's wrong I'm not trying to throw parts at it but I'm out of ideas I'm gonna put a clutch pak in it today if it will stop raining animals.

Just a Wild @$$ Guess. Take the rear drive shaft out and put the front back in. Drive around in 4w high. Report back.

I was thinkin g the same thing Andy, rear axle problem, u joint or pinion issues?

run trans thru all gears while turning input shaft by hand if output shaft moves all is good if not you may have possibly blown input shaft. it happened to me there were pieces of input shaft all over the inside of trans. just a thought

It's a 5 speed......no torque convertor!!!!

So still not fixed. I put a new clutch pak in it. Clutch ,pressure plate throw out bearing, and input shaft bearing and it's still making the same noise clattering in the bell housing. Took the flywheel to a machine shop the guy there said he wasn't going to take my money cause the flywheel was in good shape.starter isn't hung up rear end is smooth and quiet I don't know what it could be. Almost sounds like preignition but I put premium with some heat in it dame thing. Any ideas? Really need it fixed.

I'm a dummy

Ok everyone thanks for your help but I figured it out this morning when I put gas in it. I decided to run 93 octane through it and when I left the gas station the noise had almost completely stopped so it got me thinking it might be pre ignition, spark knock , whatever. So I got back home and looked online for a reason and a cure. When I first got the truck it had a dead miss so I shot air into the spark plug holes and found a bad valve on the passenger side head. So off to the junk yard, got a head off a 96 ranger and it was fixed( so I thought) . But it was clattering from what sounded like the bellhousing and then on the freeway my transfercase took a crap and left me with only 4 low so I replaced it, had gears again but was clattering so I thaught it was the transfercase I just got going bad so I put a manual transfer in it 1350 but it was still clattering so I thaught it hurt the tranny so I replaced it,still clattering, new clutch pack ,still clattering. Turns out I'm a moron, the head I put on was a u head when I needed a t head so it was pre ignition the hole time but when the transfercase blew up it through me way off track I will get another head and it will be fixed!!
