Hello all,
I have an 88 2.9 Bii. Been having lots of problems with stalling...
Heres what I have replaced....
Wires and Plugs
TFI Module
Starter Solenoid
Coil
Battery
Cleaned the Iac and throttle body
So the problem is a bit weird. When the truck gets to Temp it will stall out when put into reverse or drive. But then will start right back up and idle fine. I seem to hear a slight "miss" while at idle.....
I ran the self test and it told me my TPS is bad so I have one on order....
Based on my track record, I'm not confident that this is going to solve my problems....
Any other ideas?
I am also replacing the fuel filter in the newt few days.....
I should also mention while running KOER test I put the brake to the floor and my drivers side front brake line exploded! :bawling:
I have checked as good as I could for vacum leaks and found none....
There was another code I found, I think it was EVP or something? Have no idea what that is.
Can anyone help me out? I'm ready to smash the windows out of this thing!

Replace the fuel filter and let us know what that does before anything else. A bad TPS will cause a dead spot in the throttle, but shouldn't make it stall when put in gear.

tps can easily be tested, remove it from the vehicle completely, set your multimiter to resistance (ohms) and check the resistance of the unit, turn the unit with a screwdriver very slowly the entire range of motion, watching the multimiter for any suden spikes (resistance jumps to 1.) or drops (drops to 0.00) if you see ANY of these, your tps is toast...

when installing it, you MUST set the voltage, this can be done koeo, with the throttle closed with a sewing needle and a volt meter, you are wanting to read the voltage on one of the wires, i don't know which one it is for your vehicle, nor do i know the proper voltage, but i believe this information is in the tech library...

however what adsm said is correct, it shouldn't cause a stall, unless your spike/drop is right at the spot your tps sits at an idle (closed throttle)

unless your spike/drop is right at the spot your tps sits at an idle (closed throttle)

Which is still unlikely for two reasons.

1) It would probably stall out at idle in Park then

and

2) The TPS is two resistors going in opposite directions (for a rationality check) and they usually wear out in the middle, not at the ends, because that is where you drive and so that is where the wiper sits most of the time and wears the material off. Just like the fuel level sensor.

I'm so screwed!
So I thought I had one of those canister fuel filters. Couldn't get it open, was getting covered in gas, ripped the damn thing out and threw it down the street. Now I read the thing is empty on an 88! I broke it for nothing! Anyone know where i can findva replacement? I think its a water separator. While i was at it, i also managed to break three bake lines. It was a good day!

It's called a "fuel screener" or "fuel reservoir". They are available at the dealer still. I think I pain about $25 when I replaced mine a few years ago.

Fuel filter sits inside the frame just forward of the driver's door. Ford part number FG-800A.

Okay. So,I'm bypassing the useless fuel screener or resivour thing. Not sure if i have the four lines connected correctly. Im geting fuel out of the fail but she won't turn over. Just cranking. I did change the inline filter and the tps. But she still won't start! Put old tps on and same thing. Does anyone have a scematic for the fuel lines at the resivour or maybe just try to explain how they should route from tank to highpressure pump if i bypass the resivour/screener?
In what i think is unrelated, as i was cranking the ignition became stuck in the on position.
One more thing, inbetween cranking, i had to reset the inertia switch. Could it be bad?
Thanks again.
