pivot bushing

have the i beams out of the 96 to go in the 88 2wd ranger. the old pivot bushing had about a quarter inch showing on one side and a quarter inch plus the shoulder or head on the other.
should the new bushing be split the same way or is it supposed to go in until the head hits the beam?
 
answered my own question; it stopped raining long enough to go crawl under the work truck and the fun truck. both have the bushings pressed all the way in. on the 95, one bushing was put in from the back to the front and one the other way. on the 88, both bushings were pressed in from front to back
 
Mine is 4x4 but should be similar. I drove the new bushings in until the flange hit the beam. Then I used a hammer and punch to enlarge the non-flanged side so it would not slip back out. I read a tutorial or saw a video on YouTube that explained it well. If I read a tutorial, it was probably in the How-To Tech section of this site.

somewhere, either here or on youtube, i saw mention of a spacer to set the depth the bushing goes in. can't find it again. but it looked to be about 3/16ths wide and was held against the beam to limit how far the bushing went in.
i took a piece of 1/4 plate, pressed the bushing until it was hard to remove the plate, and then pressed a smiggeon more. this more or less centers the part of the bushing that goes into the beam. coincidentally, this matches up with the marks on the original bushing
i had put the bushing in the freezer over night to shrink it a bit. even so, it was a pita getting it in. the ball joint press just didn't cut it so i had to use an arbor press. oh joy, i get to do the other one next weekend
 
I used a BFH.

When I did mine, I pressed them all the way in to match the factory ones.
