Hi Guys,
Couple of questions here from a returning old timer. ( I used to lurk here back in the late 1990s with Jaime Fortune and Jim Oaks )
Talk to me about the 2 WD pitman arms and drag link relationships. I have a problem with the steering in my 1992 2 WD Ranger. I replaced the box with a rebuilt unit from NAPA, and I swapped out the steering shaft with a Flaming River unit.
I found out that my steering play is really in the relationship between the pitman arm and the drag link. I can wiggle the steering wheel quite a bit, and see the slop in this unit.
Now, the pitman arm that I have I got from a Junk Yard. Bought it to replace the pitman arm that I had which was from an incorrect application; my old one was for a 3" lift which I don't need on this truck.
Could the pitman arms go on upside down? Is that possible? I understand that the drag link has a taper to the stud which enters the pitman arm, could this pitman be on upside down and thus creating more play than what is really there? Can someone give me a sanity check and tell me what side should have some part numbers on it, and which direction, etc. this should be?
Also... What size is the stud diameter? Can anyone tell me about this so I can measure with some calipers and find out what I should have, to compare against what I have to see if the pitman arm is wore out?
Let me know what you guys think, I sure would love to put my steering problems to bed.
Adam
