Alright, well my new Hurst shifter was leaking after i installed it... so today I removed it and used some black rtv to seal it up good. I finish driving it tonight and guess what? It's leaking! And through any and every opening it can get through. Th RTV did it's job but not its coming up through the bolt holes. Problem still not solved!

I am starting to get pissed off. I really like the shifter but this leak is horrible!

I'm calling Summit and Hurst tomorrow hopefully if I get time.

In the meantime has anyone found a fix?

I never had that happen to any car or truck I ever put a Hurst shifter in!! Never had any friends who had that issue. I can't see why that shifter would cause a leak. Something you must of done??

the problem with the hurst on a M5OD trans is that the M5OD has no vent hose, theres a vent on the axles & transfer case but no real trans vent. the seal that comes with the hurst is very thin and easily torn, it has a fold to it thats supposed to unfold as trans temp rises, hard to explain without a pic, i'll have to try and find one. the stock shifter stub comes through a seal witch distorts in any gear, its centered and sealed in nutral, vented in gear. the hurst i have i made paper gaskets for and havent had a problem with it since, im hoping there's enough play in the pivot ball to vent somewhat, after 4 years it hasnt leaked anywhere, so either all the trans seals have been holding up to the slight pressure of operation, or its slightly venting through the pivot assy where the lever attaches.

i had the same problem with my hurst i tore that thin rubber gasket so i went to princess auto and bought some cork gasket material and it hasn't leaked since i did use RTV on it as well and i also roughed up the mating surfaces, seems to be holding well no more leaks i also put on lock washers onto the four bolts so they don't end up walking out again

The Transmission NORMALLY "Vents" through the stock shifter boot
(the little rubber boot on the stub lever) and around the rubber plugs.

IF you've sealed up theeverything else where is the expanding air laden with splash oil supposed to go?

MY hurst shifter leaks too, but I know it isn't the shifter's fault...

Well now the fluid is leaking right up through the stick.

I've spoken to Hurst today and they've told me they are aware of the problem and they do not have a fix for it. They suggested to me to search the forums for a vent self installation for the tranny.....

I am a little pissed that they don't have a solution, the guy basically told me they dont want to waste time and money on a product that they believe won't sell well enough. Plus, the Ford Ranger is going to be redesigned soon, it would be a loss for them.

He also told me that the reason the shifter lists 1988 to 2004 is because after 2004 Ford did not allow them to actually sell the shifter for those models, even if it could technically fit. I'm thinking Ford wanted to sale their FX2(whatever its called) shifter exclusively, at least that's my theory, they didnt want competition....

Anyways, this sucks!

I NEED to find this vent fix because I love this shifter, lmao!

by the way, loctite the shifter mounting bolts. they tend to come loose if you dont. i tried to put a vent on my trans, it would just "spit" oil out my vent afterwards, so i sealed it up. i check my trans oil level at every engine oil change, and usually change the trans oil itself once a year.

One more thing... when do i need to worry about filling up the tranny with fluid!?!?!?! lol

Wasn't there a write up on making a vent? I mean what makes a vent work? Im guessing a simple drilled hole won't do the trick lmao...

when i tried to make a vent, oil would be slung up against the hole and the internal pressure would blow it out, if there was a spot in the trans where oil wasnt slung up against, a simple drilled hole with a small breather would work, problem is the only spot i know of like that is the shifter base. i suppose you could drill and put a breather into one of the plastic shift-rail plugs, but im not certian that would work either.

If the stock shifter vents it from the stick, how could I possibly modify the Hurst shifter to vent. Is it possible to drill a hole at the side of the shifter?

I'm going to reinstall my stock shifter this weekend so that I can try and think of something to get this shifter working.

I love the way my Hurst shifter shifts and looks. The noise isn't bad. I just noticed a fluid leak from the shifter area. I see this is a old topic. Is there any new information on the best fix for this leak ?
