missing 4wd

at this point i do not have 4wd. Been driving through the snow with my new tires and my two truck tires with the old 3 piece rims in the bed. Actually doesnt do bad but i miss my 4wd. anyways i believe that the pinion bearing is junk and could probably use a new set of my lock in hubs. We were putting ball joints in a few weeks ago. After we have all that stuff off. where would i go from there to get to the pinion bearing??

I posted this in the axle forum like i was supposed to but no one replied a while back so id figure id try here. The pinion bearing in the front end of my mazda is shot. Now ive replaced ball joints. Where do i go from there to get to that bearing??

thanks

You have to remove the front pig. There is one hidden "pinch bolt" behind the axle. The rest are obvious. Remove your spindles and pull what you can of the axleshafts (the inner passenger side won't come out). You've already done this if you've replaced balljoints. Then just unbolt the pig and go. Expect a lot of gear oil. If there isn't, the pinion bearing is the least of your worries.

Then take this thing to a rear end shop. Setting up a differential slightly wrong means making it fail in short order.
