Pinging!nothing stops it!

"pinging" to me I equate with knocking/pre-ignition. Not sure if what is what you are experiencing or not.

Assuming that is the case. Low octane fuel or timing issues could be at play. I've also heard carbon buildup in the cylinders can cause it and that Seafoam can be used to deal with that if done the right way.

There may be other sensor problems that can cause that too.

Assuming it's an 99 i'm gonna go with the carbon buildup
Does it ping just when warmed up or all the time?

ping

Check your egr system, if you have a hand vacuum pump, use it to check the valve its self, it shoud hold vacuum do not put a lot of vacuum to it you can damage it, it should hold pressurer, if you dont have this then a piece of good fitting clean hose can be used and you can suck on it if its real bad it will let you draw air if its small leak you may not be able to detect it, this way, may also be a plugged up valve -carbon. I dont know if you have a dpfe sensor but those to can go bad keeping the valve from working, also check to see if the vacuum source to the valve has vacuum when increasing the rpm, also do a running check on the valve by applying vacuum if the valve is working engine should run rough or die when the vacuum is applied, that will tell you the valve is working but still maybe a sensor problem

If you haven't tried a Seafoam treatment yet, give it a try.

+1 on checking the EGR.

Does shutting the truck off stop it?

I'd also check the EVAP system. I had the vent become plugged up from mud dauber wasps and it caused pinging problems.

EGR is another potential candidate.

Bad fuel (this ethanol crap sucks) can also be a contributing factor.

I have a Cadillac that had the same issue. Took it into the shop. They changed out the egr. cleaned the fuel system. I took it back to them several times and they could not fix it. I did some research and this could also be your problem. There is a passage from where the egr bolts on. It comes out in the bottom of the intake manifold. If this passage is clogged you can change every part on the truck and you will never fix the problem.

To clean out the passage that Terry is referring to, use a section of the inner speedo cable attached to a drill.

The cable is strong and flexible so it will follow the bends in the passage.

Kinda like a RotoRutter drain gadget.

Use lots of carb cleaner to soften up the crud.
