Work Smarter not Harder
1999 3.0L Manual transmission pilot bearing removal. Any suggestions?

The most common suggestion is this; find or whittle a dowel that fits the inner diameter of the pilot bearing fairly close but not tight. Fill (almost) the inner cavity of the pilot bearing with bread or a medium thick grease. Start the dowel i to the cavity and use a hammer to drive it in. That uses " hydraulic pressure" to drive the bearing out. It works well. May not work for everyone. But it is a good method that will not destroy anything.

I believe pack it with grease and use a wood dowel and a hammer is generally a common method. Bread works but most people that have used it don’t recommend doing it again. Or use a puller. My F-150 had one that was so stuck I had to grind through it with a carbide burr and collapse it with a chisel. That wasn’t fun.

Here is an example of what I mentioned above. I whistled my stick out of some brass rod.

Socket, hammer and bread. You can use grease but bread works way better and doesn't make as much of a mess.

I guess that I've been lucky. I've been able to use a slide hammer with the hook attachment successfully and the bearing came right out.

I ended up spending the money on a "blind bearing removal tool" and it worked like a charm after the bread and grease tricks did not. Cost was about 60$ on amazon compared to 125$ on RockAuto and over 150$ at some other places. I doubt it will hold up well after some time but I don't plan on using it that often.

bread and a bell housing bolt did it for me!
