Is the location of the pilot bearing in the flywheel critical? Before I took the flywheel to be resurfaced, I measured the location of the pilot bearing relative to the bushing in the flywheel. I then pressed out the pilot bearing.

When I got the flywheel back from resurfacing I found they had pressed out the bushing and I have no dimensions for the location of the bushing. Since my dimension are referenced from the bushing, I have lost the position of the pilot bearing. So far I just centered the bushing in the flywheel then located the pilot bearing from there. Is that good enough or is there a more precise pilot bearing location requirement?

The pilot bearing is the little thinwalled torrington bearing

There is a solid spacer around it.

Proper placement for both the spacer AND the bearing are FLUSH
with the bolt surface of the flywheel.

I can do that but they were not flush with the bolt face originally. The pilot bearing was .030" below the solid spacer/outer bushing and the solid spacer was recessed a little below the bolt face. Flush seems like a better way to go. Thanks

Just a follow up. After looking at the wear area on the transmission input shaft, I could see the pilot bearing was running on the very end (front). I think that is not the best condition. Running slightly in from the end would seem better to be sure the pilot bearing is fully engaged.

I think by moving the solid spacer/bushing flush with the flywheel bolt surface will put the pilot bearing in a better location relative to the input shaft.

Good call Allan.
