pilot bearing for M5OD

i have been searching the forums for a little now and found nothin . I am doing a M5OD trans swap into my 93 ranger 4.0 and i heard two different places for the pilot bearing to go. i have heard in the back of the crank and i have also heard put it in the flywheel. Which one is it i dont want to mess up my fresh transmssion. Thanks in advance.

When you get in there and look at it, you will clearly see that there is only one place for it to go.

Only if that's an '83 4.0L....

Only 1983-84 2.8Ls (plus a few misc 4bangers) had the bearing in the crank.

You'll need a donor flywheel. Then you'll see where the bearing goes...

BEWARE -- 4.0Ls have a bushing between the bearing and flywheel, and reman flywheels very often DO NOT include it.

yea, on the 4.0L it goes in the flywheel. on the 2.3L it goes in the crank. It is very obvious on the 2.3L that it goes in the crank, the flywheel hole is much larger than the bearing. It should be pretty obvious when you get in there.

Yup, 4.0 goes into the flywheel. I suggest buying a NEW flywheel as they are as cheap as a used flywheel after you have it resurfaced; and the new flywheel has the sleeve Alan was referring too.

thank yall for the help, the guy i am getting the tranny from alrady has a new flywheel with it but it has no pilot bearing or nothing in it so i will have to install it so now i know for sure. also the driveshaft length wont change with the swap either right?and the starter from my automatic will work with the manual trans right? thank you again

The transmission length will still be the same if you had the A4LD before.

You MUST use a manual transmission starter.

You don't have a pilot bushing unless your 4.0L is really a 350 SBC.

We've already discussed the pilot bearing.

The 4.0L Ranger uses the same small pilot bearing as the 2.9L which is just a little larger diameter than the M5OD front input shaft. On the 4.0L however, the bearing is press fitted into a steel sleeve which in turn is press fitted into the flywheel. To get this sleeve you either have to buy a new flywheel (which even then often does not include the sleeve), or get a used one from a used 4.0L flywheel.

thank you i understand what you are saying now i thought that it all one piece with the pilot bearing..... also is the plate that goes between the engine and transmission different size between the automatic and manual?

I don't know about a different size, but the starter goes on the other side, so it's definitely different.
