Photobucket discontinued free third-party postings, so you now have to pay a monthly or yearly fee to have any Photobucket images show up on any third-party site, like this forum for example.

Ya, photobucket really put the screws to a lot of people. Not just the pic owners, but to the readers who were relying on the photos as references to better understand the topics at hand.

All who made use of PB (including myself) would have to re-up all particular photos to wherever they are/were to keep the said thread/pic alive using another webhoster such as Imgur or something similar....otherwise they are all lost (unless you want to start dishing out funds).

I think this is going to be an ongoing issue for sites that require a webhoster to post images. A lot of websites allow posting photos directly from a computer. Is there a drawback to this type of photo posting other than getting a new computer?

The ranger station would have to pay significantly more for storage and bandwidth. Unless everyone wants to pay a monthly charge to use the site, it's not feasible.

Don't quite follow you,

why would one need to replace their computer to post pics from the pc instead of using a service?

I was thinking the PC would host the picture. I don't know how the system works but it sounds like the PC doesn't host it, it would be just transferred to the Ranger Station server and switching to a different computer would have no effect on losing the photo.

I know how to use a computer but still don't know the details of how it works.

To the tune of about $400/yr.

Flikr and imgur are popular alternatives. IMO as a recent convert so far Flikr is better than PB ever was.

Yeah I've been using imgur for about 5 years now, no complaints save for their mobile app, which is utter garbage.

Finding a new place to host the images isn't really a big deal. The issue is going back through the posts and updating the url to the new image.

Right or wrong I just posted albums at the begining of my build thread with the approximate dates of when I was doing what.

I don't know if I will ever have time to update my 6yrs worth of 50+ pages of build thread and my 30 something page (IIRC) swap thread.

I see,

one who wants to create their own web hosting service would have to create a domain name, register it with a clearing house thru a registrar, pay a fee to keep it running, default on your payments & say adios to the access to your hosted pics.:bawling:

This is what I want to do. Thru reading various forums I think a low cost domain and website can be had thru AWS [Amazon Web Services]. They have a free tier and you pay for only the amount you use. So your pics would have to be accessed multiples of thousands to start adding up to more than a couple bucks a month. So far I've bought a domain, 5 years for $8.00. Now I need to host it, but I haven't had a lot of free time.

Any way, here is a link to a thread of Photobucket alternatives;

I mean if i had access to all these photos direct source id take time when i could to move em but honestly it would take forever...
