i wanting to repaint my ranger since the clearcoat is peeling off in chunks, the paints 17 yrs old so its lasted long enough, i want to do it myself, ive got some experience airbrushing and i want to step up to painting the whole truck, the problem im having is picking a air compressor that will be strong enough. ive been looking at spray guns and compressors, the spray guns are rated at SCFM at 40psi while the compressors are rated at SCFM at 90psi :annoyed: So if u guys have any advice or can tell me what spray gun/ compressor combos ur using that would help me out or if u know anything that would help id be greatful.

its all about how many cfm's the compressor is rated for not really psi...you also need a good regulator/water separator

You need about a 6hp (preferrably 2 stage) compressor with about 60 gallon tank. You can buy a cheapy half decent spray gun @ Harbor freight... the purple HVLP SATA copy, throw the cup that it comes with away and buy a SATA cup for it. The SATA cup fits

I am in the same boat for the compressor.. I have a smaller compressor rated for 5.9cfm @ 90psi. Now some guns are rated for 4.9cfm @ 43psi. SO if my compressor is going to be running at a smaller psi does that give me higher CFM? Can I go up to a 9 CFM gun?

you will have more cfms at a lower pressure. most compressors(at least that ive seen) give their cfm ratings at both 40 and 90 psi. Your compressor probably puts out around 7cfm at 40psi
