Do they sell performance chips for the 2.9L...im not looking to get more horsepower although it would be nice but more or less just better fuel mileage.:headbang:

Ok so Ford, under pressure from the economy police, did everything their enginers could slide-rule up to get the most possible fuel milage out of that neat little engine...and you think a guy in his garage figured out how to get even more???
Look to your tuneup and then to your tire height. Larger tires cost economy...every time!

There are things that can be done to improve mpg on almost any engine, its just harder on the newer ones and the increases are less....but possible. I dont think Ford did all that great anyway. I had a 84 2.8 S-10 wiith a carb that did far better then the Ranger I have now. Most perfromance chips increase power at full throttle and leaves everything else the same until full throttle. On my wifes 07 Impala all I did was put in a new air filter, synthetic oil and Duralube and it went from an avg of 26 mpg to 29 mpg by the mileage computer.

i was just wondering because my mileage as far as i know is about 240 miles to a tank and i wasnt empty yet(screwy gas gauge)..i think im going to put a KandN on it and then headers and a full 2.5 inch exhaust to try and get a little extra power and gas mileage.thank you for the input.

You'd be better off taking the money out of your wallet and sending it to me, and I'll take dump in a box and send it back to you.

All those bolt-on's will yield about a .017% increase in mileage.

Lets look into more useful solutions:

What gearing do you have? I'm assuming you have 33 inch tires?

yes i have 33" BFG A/T..what is the stock gear ratio and what gears should i put in it because im looking for a ration that will give me better gas mileage but will also still alow me to do 65 on the freeway without pulling 3500rpm lol

Leave the engine alone.. With 33's on that rig nothing you could do to the engine would help. The problem is that engine would still be running the same rpm as it does now..
What I'd do is put 4:56's in there..maybe even 4:88's.
To find the present gears jack up one wheel. Mark both the tire and the axle using chalk or anything you can see. Put the tranny in neutral, take the park brake off.. Then turn the tire one turn -EXACTLY- while counting the turns the axle makes.. Those turns will be the axle ratio.
Eiher 3:23, 3:54, 3:73, or even 4:11. Do it a couple of times to insure you get the correct reading.
