Not sure if this belongs in the computer forum, but I figured I’d get faster/more responses here.

With any 2.1 PC speaker system, can a regular headphone extension cable be used to extend the wire between the satellite speakers and subwoofer? I bought a cheap set to use as rear speakers for for LCD TV so we don’t have to have the TV so loud. However the cable length for the satellite speakers was too short to reach the sub and I couldn’t use an extension because it wouldn’t allow sound to come out of both speakers (the plug had 3 black bands instead on the normal 2). If all 2.1 speakers are like this, I’ll have to rethink my options.

I bought a 40in LCD for our bedroom and when we watch movies on it, we have to have the TV pretty loud to hear it. So I thought of getting a bookshelf stereo or PC speakers to mount near our bed to keep the TV volume down. I like the idea of using PC speakers, cheaper and one less electronic cluttering up my TV stand. My options are small because I really can’t afford to spend more than $50 on a speaker setup nor do I need anything powerful/fancy. And I want to keep the satellite speakers small so I can easily mount/conceal them.

Are you sure you didn't mean that the other way around? If the plug has 3 bands, sound should come out of both speakers. The 3 bands are left positive, right positive, and a common ground. Most mini-jack plugs are the 3-band style.

if i read it right i think by "3 bands" he means 3 insulators. if its a 2.1 system, its got 4 conductors, right?
