I find checks and ACH very reliable and easy to use.
I typically use CC for in person transactions with brick and mortar.
I carry enough cash for the spur of the moment person to person transactions. For bigger stuff I’ll either bring cash or bank check.

Works every time….

Third party stuff seems mostly like a scam. Even banks to some extent. The bank I use makes enough interest off my money where they don’t need to charge me fees for everything.

Any suggestions for other payment apps?
Who are you trying to get money to? My friends in the USA are always talking about Venmo, that seems to be the app of choice for younger people. Other parts of the world people seem to do direct bank transfers... My banking app in Canada has that as a free feature.
For buying online, I basically have to restrict myself to companies i know to be reputable, and even then I always make sure I use a credit card with good fraud protection.

eBay is the obvious headache if you want to avoid PayPal.

I know people I work seem fond of cash app. I'm like @Roert42 for in person transactions and use cash to pay back family for stuff, so never used it myself.

Never had a problem with PayPal myself. Practically never use friends and family on PP, I'd just assume include the extra 3% (or what ever it is) for a normal goods and services transaction. Every time I've had an issue with a seller PP resolved it in my favor as they should have.

There is one other payment options I've used before. There are times that places don't accept PayPal. Some of those are places I particularly want to give my CC information, but the deal is just too good not to give it a shot. For that I have an account with Privacy.com that allows me to set up temporary single use CC numbers with spending limits. I set up account for card for single transaction, maybe $10 over purchase price and make the deal, it processes just like a normal card. I've used it a couple of times and only had an issue with one purchase that needed a charge back, it went through with no issues.

if it is a person to person transfer, I have had great luck with Venmo and Zelle. Zelle is offered by my bank, and if it is to another customer in that bank, it is almost instantaneous. if it is some one out of network, it takes several days. Venmo is pretty much next day no matter who you send it to.

Beyond that, Samsung Pay or CC for online, preferably CC as it is more protected. I would also imagine that Google Wallet or Apple Pay would be similar.

For people I know I use e-transfer through my bank. Its the web stores or amazon sellers that I use PayPal for. I suppose I could use my credit card but I'm worried about getting stiffed or hacked. But it seems that most of you use cc online with no issues. I'll look into the suggestions...
Thanks

One thing about Amazon- I only buy items that say “fulfilled by Amazon”. I’ve sadly had quite a few issues with Amazon over the years, but until now they’ve always done the right thing. However, when you’re buying from a “marketplace” seller, things can get pretty dicey. Seems every big company now has a “ marketplace” - even Walmart.
I guess the payment all goes through the big merchant but as far as proving how the transaction went… that’s another story. I only want to deal with the actual big merchant.
As far as fraud protection goes, the only bank I’ve had to deal with for that was Desjardins out of Quebec and they’ve been amazing. I’ve recently moved to TD and haven’t had to deal with them yet but I made sure to choose a CC that specifically claimed “max online fraud protection blah blah blah”. Hopefully I never have to test it…

Final (pessimistic) thought: I sort of feel like is inevitable that all those off us who use plastic will eventually have our card info stolen by someone, so best to keep a close eye on the statements and have a plan of attack for if/when it happens. There are so many card skimmers at gas pumps and convenience stores it’s sickening. I use my banking app to put a $100 limit on my card so if it’s ever stolen that’s the worst damage they can do.

I've been using PP for years - I do mean years - and have never had an issue - knock on wood.
My bank includes Venmo, but haven't had occasion to use it yet. Single use CC numbers would be my go to if I get nervous.

PayPal has always worked well for me and it's my "go-to". I've used vendors and sellers. They're ok but quirky. I like PayPal as a security level for my credit card.

i have been using paypal since it came out with no issues. thats the only thing i use for online, other than occasionally using the cc.

in person is always cash

My problem with PP is that they now require a physical address. I don't have one as I live in an RV and have a PO Box #. I've been arguing with them for weeks, provided my bank statement and Canadian government issued drivers license that has the PO Box as my address. I'm not sure why they would need a physical address. They claim security. I call BS. Last chat they said the pics of DL and bank statement would be reviewed by Thursday this week. I guess I'll see...

I feel your pain. When I was living in France I opened a PayPal account and attached that to my foreign bank account. Occasionally my wife and I would move money from the Canadian account to the French one and vice versa through PayPal since it was much cheaper than bank transfers. One day PayPal locked us out of both PayPal accounts and froze our PayPal balances. They said we were behaving like money launderers. I barely trusted them before that and now I wouldn’t trust them as far as I can throw them. I only use them for very low value eBay purchases when there’s no other option. I’ll be ditching them forever in the near future. Security is fine but they often tend to treat their customers very badly.

Though VENMO charges a small transfer fee, they offer a solid, quick easy to use system.
