Well, I'm looking to change my rear-end from the 8.8" 28-spline 3.08 Open Diff to a 8.8" 31-spline 3.73 Lock-Rite.

As the title says, what all is needed for the swap? Part numbers and dealers would be most helpful :icon_thumby:

you need a complete 31 spline axle out of an explorer, plus gears and lockers of your choice.

unless you want to go the expensive, custom, moly shaft route to "convert" your existing axle housing to 31 spline. 100% not worth it.

i dont think you can the bearings are bigger on the 8.8 31 spline. it would be eastest to get a explorer 8.8 . ask 4x4junkie he would know.

you can "convert" a 28 spline to a 31 spline, but it requires custom made shafts...like i said. very expensive and not worth it.

id obtain a complete 31 spline out of a junkyard.

If your doing to disc brakes (you should) you need the emergency brake cable too. Also, the rear brake hard line with the hose.

3.73s are fairly common. Just make sure you get an axle with an open differential because there is no lockright made for an 8.8 with a L/S carrier.

Thanks for the input.

I'm gonna get the housing and everything, and I might as well get the Disc Brakes while I'm at it.... better stopping power is going to be nessecary before long =p

Looks like I'll be making Junkyard visits :icon_thumby:

It's about $300 for the shafts to convert a 28 spline axle to 31 (I have such shafts in my Ranger's 8.8).

I would probably still go the Explorer axle route though. if anything should happen, all parts are likely to be available at any junkyard.

Thats what I was thinking, junkyards usually have plenty of Explorer's to use as parts donors.
