Your truck must be from a state that had strick emissions testing or something, my dads doesnt have it nor does mine.

Are you able to get pics of this knock sensor?

sure...i'll try to get a photo posted today.

bought the truck when i moved to alabama; no idea what the emissions laws are here, but i do know that when my smog pump siezed and snapped the belt, i replaced both.

If you have a timing light you can have someone tap on the block next to the sensor while the engine is running and if the timing mark moves the sensor is good. just dont tap on the sensor they are real fragile.

oh the sensor is definitely bad...the elec. connector was so corroded with oil and gunk, it broke off! i tried to jb weld it together, held for a while, but is now fubar.

Nex to the coil is a 2 wire connector black that goes under the exhaust manifold just above the motor mount on the drivers side it is kinna hard to see unless your under the truck behind the suspension.

The knock sensor - drivers side low on the block - is needed for the computer to function properly and it is an easy item to find. I've never seen an oil sensor on a 2.8.

Now back to your original problem: If you don't need smog inspections, try for a DuraSpark conversion and don't worry about these things. The holes in the head get plugged, you ignore the knock sensor and so forth. All components of the factory computer system must be working for the engine to run properly if you have the computer system.

Really that thing is a knock sensor? Safe to say I broke mine (my trucks computer sensor doesnt use one, I dont think) but mine runs great. But my dads is hooked up so I might have to test to see if his is working, his runs great but curiosity kills me sometimes.

Yup - has a knock sensor. Your truck will run better if it is working. There is a way of testing it while it is installed, but I can't remember. A manual should show you how; you connect a meter to the wire and then tap the block and you will get a signal. NOT SURE - so check a manual.
My truck has to be tested under California's strict testing rules and my area (San Francisco Bay Area) has stricter rules than other parts of the Sate. All components of the system must be working to pass and when they are working, the truck runs better. If I lived somewhere else, I'd do a DuraSpark because when these things fail, it can be expensive.

you can take it off and plug it in while the engine is running tap it with apair of pliers with a timing light and see if the timing retards if it dont it is the sensor a wire or the computer

There's an oil pressure send on the 2.8...if memory serves me, it is very near to the fuel pump. Still searching for the knock sensor, but to be honest, I haven't looked for some time so it could very well be available at jcw or advance, etc...

I will more than likely opt for the duraspark conversion in the future...have also considered swapping the intake manifold for efi, but i just don't want to hassle with those projects right now.

The computer works fine without it what the knock sensor does is tell the computer to retard the timing when a knock is sensed. the knock sensor is screwed into the block under the drivers side exhaust manifold just back from the fuel pump. If you look by the coil there is a black two wire connector that drops down behind the power steering pump to the sensor. your better off going to the wreckers to find a used one if yours dont work unless you want to pay out the ass for one. If you dont get a code 25 during the goose test KOER the sensor is working. you can also test it with a timing light tap on the block by the sensor and if the timing retards it is good.

Yes, there is an oil pressure sender/sensor on the 2.8. It's down low on the drivers side of the block nestled in between the block and steering pump. What your truck will have depends on what gauges are in the cluster. If you have a dummy light, its just a switch.

The knock sensor can be replaced with any number of knock sensors from just about any car. They all listen for the same noise, and react the same way. The only real major difference is the thread of the stud it's attached to.
