Parking brake cable question

Without buying the special tool, how do you get the cable out of this coupling?

with considerable difficulty.
first bend the retaining tabs to clear the slugs. there are tabs on the back of the tube.
then I used a sharp edged set of channel locks to move a slug to the center.
there isn't much to grab, so dull or rounded tools aren't much help.
