Without buying the special tool, how do you get the cable out of this coupling?

Parking brake cable question

with considerable difficulty.
first bend the retaining tabs to clear the slugs. there are tabs on the back of the tube.
then I used a sharp edged set of channel locks to move a slug to the center.
there isn't much to grab, so dull or rounded tools aren't much help.

Yes, I have tried that. That connector is made of kryptonite! I once saw a video of someone taking up slack in the cable and working it out but I can't find it now!

The cable end is always fused to the coupler, so I bend the coupler open a bit with heavy-duty flat external snap ring pliers, then bend it back when I'm done. Figure for the half-a-dozen times I ever need to take a given cable off, it'll survive.

I’ve used a punch before and a lot of fidgeting and lack of a third hand to work them free. Not ideal. I’m inclined to try buying the tool. I put grease all over things during reassembly to try and prevent it from sticking so bad

On mine, I had to create slack in the cable first. Look at step 1 and two here and see if yours is the same.

Thank you all. Awesome suggestions. I tried everything you suggested, and took certain parts from it and was able to do it. I studied pictures of the special tool, and I looked through my toolbox and tried this. It was a little big, but it was all I had. I was able to get one side on the end of the cable and the other side to the other end of the connector for leverage. It took several attempts because you’re working with a very small area and the tool was too big. I used vice grips and got a small amount of slack which may have helped. But it worked!

Glad you got it. I wasn't aware that a special tool exists for that.

Nice creative fix- kudos!
