So since I'm upgrading my axle to an 8.8 i wanted to add some paint. I decided to go with a fluorescent orange! I'm not sure if I like it yet. But what should I paint the center section? Black? And what paint would i need to paint it with? It looks thick and I can't imagine trying to sand it.

get some industrial grade rustoleum in black

Actually, the orginal ones back in the day were just the opposite colors. Housings black and the center section was a red-oxide orange. That's where the term "Pumpkin" came from. Most important thing about painting anything is the surface prep. No grease, oil or loose rust. I've used a wire wheel on a drill (or sand blast) with no problem. Find an epoxy enamal if you can.. Like to see people at least taking the time in painting something rather than throwing an old look rusty thing under there.

Nice bit of info Dave, I didn't know that was where the term Pumpkin came from.

If you want it to last, use POR-15 on it 91Toyota.

I had mine painted red to match the truck. looked awesome. but i dont have any pictures.

your reminds me of an allis chalmers.

POR-15 is the shizznit!
Tractor or Inpliment paint works great to.

Being from California, rust is just a color. I just cleaned as much oil, dirt, and grease off that I could. And what I couldn't get off got painted.:icon_twisted:
Then just sprayed Rustoleum gloss black enamel.

I sanded the crap out of the axle (it was bare metal) then used a primer then layed the paint. Probably should have went with an epoxy paint (like the white/black colors at walmart) that holds up really well! I just wanted to do something different and I don't like my stuff to look like crap. I actually thought about camo but i'm not really a camo guy.

Oh yeah the shock mount is bent a little to the side (just one side is pushed in)
