I played around a little bit with an old Ford emblem I had. I was lucky enough to get it apart in one piece the on the first try. I used a heat gun the soften up the glue. I had an extra backing plate with better chrome on it that I am going to use when I put it back together.

I sanded it with 180 grit to get the color off, then I polished it up with 400 grit.

I chipped the edge a little, but its hardly noticeable after its painted and glued together

That turned out really good!

I read your write up and it inspired me. My emblem already matched my blue truck, but I had to give it a try:icon_twisted:.

dude that is bad a$$ im gonna try it with mine after i paint mine OD green

how did you do that i dont quite see how by the pictures

Heat up the emblem using a heat gun to soften the glue, then get a small flat blade screw driver to pry the blue center section out of the chrome backing plate. Make sure to go slow and keep it warm or the chrome from the lettering will come off in the glue. After you have successfully removed the bule center section sand the backside of it with 180 or 200 grit sand paper until all the blue paint has been removed. The lettering and chrome outline wont sand off because they are recessed into the emblem. After you have removed all the blue and the emblem should be somewhat transparent. Then use some 400 or finer sandpaper to smooth up the surface until it looks like lightly frosted glass from the front. Tape of the front side of the emblem and paint the backside if the emblem using a color of you choice. I did 3 light coats so that it wouldnt puddle up or fisheye. After the paint is 100% dry glue the center section back into the backing plate.

Casper did a write up on this I think it was in one of the inline magizines. If I remember right he found that brand new emblems are more likely to come apart in one piece. I only used an old one because I had it laying there, so I had nothing lose. I also had an extra backing plate with decent chrome from my old truck from when the center section fell out:dunno: Just make sure the emblem you attempt to do this with is a two piece emblem, you should feel a groove between the chrome outer ring and the ring of blue.

EDIT: here is a link to Casper's write up he does a better job explaining than me. lol http://www.therangerstation.com/Magazine/Summer2009/blue_oval_color_change.htm

I think I may try another one, but I want to lightly sandblast the chrome lettering out. Then paint it all black and sand it off to leave me with black lettering then I ill hit the background with yellow or green or something different. I think I may have another emblem sitting somewhere, or I can grab a few at the JY next time I am there. Ill be sure to post pics if it works out.

I just used regular old spray paint.

I decided to try another emblem, I separated the two pieces and sandblasted the backside to remove the chrome in the recessed letters. Then I painted the whole thing black. When the paint gets good and dry I will sand it off to leave the letters black. I havnt settle on a background color yet. When I make more progress Ill post up pis. I wont get a chance to work on it until the weekend when I go home.

I sanded the back down, and it looks good. I had a couple air bubbles that I had to touch up, so I wont be able to finish sanding and painting until it dries.
