overheating

ive got 1985 ranger i bought to play around in the woods with i had to put a new motor in (2.8 v6) and its overheating. ive put a new water pump, thermostat, and even put a diiferent radiator in ( used radiator) and its still over heating any help would be nice

Check thermostat orientation. I've put mine in backwards....

Cold engine
Remove rad cap
Make sure Rad is full to the top

Start engine
There may be a slight surge of coolant out rad cap opening but only slight
If coolant/water starts to overflow out cap opening then you most likely have a head gasket leak.
Pressure from inside a cylinder is being forced into the coolant passages in the head, this pushes coolant out and so it overflows out the rad cap opening.

When rad cap is on then system gets instant pressure from a leak like that and the "air" from the cylinder leak can block coolant flow in the head causing overheating, also full overflow tank

If that is happening or you think it is happening then Search this site for "Glove test" it is a free test for blown head gasket or cracked head, and is more definitive than overflow test.

The placement of the thermostat varies on engine year. If you have a lower thermostat (you would have seen it when you replaced the water pump) you have to detach the upper radiator hose and fill the engine with coolant through there first.
