overdue project

My ranger is dying out and I've been considering a 5.0 swap. I've been looking at a mustang engine , transmission(prob.auto/AOD). What year would be best . The ranger I'm starting with is a 94 XLT/3.0/A4LD/2 wd. I would also like to install a explorer rearend. Any advice is deeply appreciated.
