I have a 98 4.0 4x4 automatic and ive tryed everything i can think of including a scanner and havent figured anything out ... so this is whats wrong when i turn it on it runs great then down the road (not after sertant amount of miles ) the overdrive light comes on and starts flashing then as soon as that happens it shifts extremely hard and some time clunks into gear. ive learn putting the truck in neutral and turning it off and back on makes the light go away and then it shifts perfect after that but then will come back on down the road and id have to do it again..
ive put it on a scaner a buddy has and it wont read the problem because it has to be drivin to happen and the scanner tells you to shut down :icon_confused: ..any ideers??

Well, you are right: The OD light IS making it shift hard. When the trans acts up, it stores a code in the computer. The computer then turns the pressure on the trans all the way up. This causes really hard shifting. It does this to make sure it actually shifts into the gears without slipping. It's basically a safe mode to prevent damaging the trans.

It seems that restarting the truck makes it go back to normal, but as soon as the computer senses the fault, it goes back into safe mode.

As for the actual fault, I can't really help you. You need a scanner that can specifically read transmission codes.

Transmission Range Sensor/Selector Maybe had the same problem when shifting into 2nd

As exbass94 says above the 5R55E trans OD light flashes when a problem occurs 3 times during a key on engine running cycle. The code should stay in memory, alot of generic code readers will not read trans codes. We need the code, fluid condition and mileage For an educated guess. Some known problems are EPC solenoid, Torque Converter solenoid, valve body gaskets blown out and so on.
