So I've got a 2001 Ranger 5spd manual that came stock with the 1354E tcase and the shift on the fly dash switch. I've since converted to a 1354M. But current don't have that case in since my little shock load issue. But I soon will put a manual back in it.

Last winter, there were times I had to switch her to 4hi on the freeway at speeds no more than 40 that was really slick...or on my road that was covered in snow.....can I still do this with a manual case? Push in the clutch, pull back to 4hi, then keep on going? or....? Is it safe for the life of my case?

Kind of an out of the norm question, but I've never really got an answer.

yep i do it in my truck all the time man just cant go into 4l unless your completely stopped. same with taking it out of 4h just push forward and put the clutch but have to be completely stopped to go out of 4l

I know that....i can be rolling some and shift it in and out of low.

yeah i do the same thing but for the 4h yeah just push in the clutch and pull back man same with going out i have done it at like 35-40 mph no problems

I was always wondering if I can be moving when I want to shift in and out of 4hi. I already knew about 4lo.

Ya mean shift on the fly 4hi/2hi? Pretty damn sure you can. I've never had an issue with it. Actually yeah, there will be no problem with the clutch in.

I usually pull over after I shift cuz I forgot to unlock the hubs too.

Thank god for driveline vibration, I'd never remember to unlock the damn things.

Its perfectly fine to do.

Im putting a D30 in soon so I wont have to worry about locking hubs.

Actually, you don't have to push in on the clutch to shift into 4WD hi from 2WD as long as you are not spinning/slipping the rear wheels. I shift in and out of 2WD/4WD hi all the time without using the clutch when it is raining. There are times when I want 4WD traction and others when I don't need or want it in the wet.

I don't think it would be a good idea to shift into 4WD hi while going around a sharp corner with the clutch in or out. This question was not asked but came to mind while posting.

Yeah....I mean I knew it was 'okay', I just figured I'd get a second opinion on it. Usually, I'd throttle out, flip the switch or pull the handle, then keep on going. I only use it on snow on the street or highway.

Now this year, being locked, I'm sure I won't even need to unless I get tired of driving sideways. lol.
