Rangers,

I’m considering keeping my original exhaust on my 89 2.9L including the cat. Any thoughts on how to go to a 2-1/4 or 2-1/2” exhaust pipe and muffler after the cat and the effects?

I have a 58 mm throttle body from a 86 to put on to replace the original 54 mm and I’m going to modify the air box to get more air to a K&N filter. I want to make sure the increased exhaust has a more efficient way to get out to increase performance and not backfire.

It’s my plan to adjust the exhaust first since the throttle body is just a four bolt process and cutting the air box is just a couple of hours.

While you are at it, any thoughts on upgrading the rubber pipe between the air box and the throttle body would also be appreciated.

Dynomax sells a 2 1/2 cat back system, I'll bet there are others, too.

I had mine made by a local shop. All in with muffler it was $210.

I put a Gibson cat-back on my Sport Trac when it was practically new. Slam dunk to install. They make kits for Rangers too, typically just one kit for the Supercab and if you have a shorter wheelbase you just cut the mid pipe to size. 2.5'' pipe, eliminates the resonator, and the muffler is kinda loud.

Duly noted. Thanks.
