wasnt sure where to put this, thought about putting it in the rbv axles section, but wasnt sure.

so i replaced all 3 u joints in the dana 35 with some "heavy duty, greasable" type from oreilly's, im not sure if they were master pro, or precision or what. usually they hand me masterpro, and i think thats what they were.

any ways any one know if this is the same standard 297, if so whats so heavy duty? how does it compare to the 760?

i have a 33's and an aussie, with the c clip eliminator in the front and i havent had any issues yet, but was just looking for more info on these u joints. i do regrease them after every trip so they dont get driven more then 300 miles between greasing.

as far as i have read you either get a 297 or a 760.

either way they are GARBAGE....

get some nice spicer u-joints, you will be happier in the end...car-quest sells them..

i figured that would likely be the outcome. i beat on my truck pretty hard, so im surprised that i havent had a failure, but i also wheel in the loose soil; its a lot more forgiving.

im really just wondering whats so heavy duty about them. they dont really seem any different to me.

Anything above a Spicer 5-760X is $$$ wasted if you are not also running alloy axle shafts.

As for your O'Reillys joints... Do they have a circular forging on the cross? If so, they are probably same as 760s
If not (they are basically smooth), then they are likely more like 297s (and yes, possibly not even as strong as 297s).

Spicers are like $25-30 w/free shipping all over Ebay, it's kinda pointless to use anything else.

i finally got home during the day light to check to u joints, they dont have the circular forging like the 760's. next time i go into oreillys im going to ask whats so heavy duty, and have they show me the difference in the average and heavy duty joints they carry.

I didn't know the 5-760x worked in the rear driveshaft.. They seem to be pretty different to me.

In my Grand Marquis I run the preimium NAPA U joint. Engine is over 430 HP. Thing started comming loose it wasnt the U joint, the yoke that bolts to the pinion flange had gone bad. The caps brgs were good but the hole the cap fit in had wallowed out lucky had another flange in my parts in the back room.

I say this a lot--TTB drive axle parts aren't made anymore. Don't put cheap parts on them. When a joint breaks, it often takes the yokes with it. That 5-760X is what you want.

5-760X is for the front axle shafts (Dana35 4WD).

For the driveshaft you want Spicer 5-1310x (non-greasable, cold-forged) or 5-153x (greaseable)

(or if you have the little 1210 driveshaft joints, it's Spicer 5-443X)
