i'm going for the lockrite or the aussi locker and 5.13 gears for my 8.8 31 spline and d44.

the 8.8 lockers all read they are for open diffs, mine is limited slip. can i use the carrier out of my 28 spline 8.8 that came off the ranger.

No you can't. The Powertrax No-slip can be had for LS carriers, but at that point you might as well get a Detroit.

ok i'm seeing the 3/4" crosspin and a 7/8" pin is that the difference between the open and the limited slip?

just do yourself a favor and source an open carrier (28 spline) from a junkyard or from someone on here. That what I had to do. And DO NOT get a notched cross pin, you can hit the ring gear with a grinder ever so slightly and get the stock cross pin to work.

Ok I have one from my stock axle. Hahnsb2 says it won't work with the 28 spline carrier. I'm searching the internet up and down and not really finding a solid answer. Building the truck has been easier than finding parts. Lol

You want the 7/8" cross-pin. Only 86 and older 31 spline 8.8s had 3/4" cross-pins and all 28 spline 8.8s have 3/4" cross-pins.

My suggestion is to either buy a 31 spline open carrier and run an Aussie or go with a Detroit, either will be just as much work since you're setting up gears anyways. Detroit will be the strongest, the No-Slip in the LS carrier will be the weakest. Don't forget to weld your tubes too.

You can't use the 28 spline carrier in a 31 spline diff because the side gear "hubs" are different diameters, not to mention the difference in cross-pin size.

Thanks that's exactly what I was looking for. I am planning to weld the tubes and possibly making a truss.

random thought on the cross pin size thing. I had a '92 lincoln town car that had the carrier bearing explode (that's how I ended up with it) and it had a 3/4" crosspin which was about the only salvageable part out of the thing other than the shafts... I knew I had heard that about the cross pin size but found that oddball one...

If it was a 28 spline 8.8 the 3/4" cross-pin is correct..

31 spline, that's what confused me...

PM me for info on my 5.13's and master rebuild kit for the 8.8, I may be going to a different diff here soon and won't be gearing my current diff from 4.56.
