Opinions on Lockers

What breakage?

Only breakage I know of is when somebody was running a 7.5 behind a 4L w/ 34's. It was bound to happen even if there were just spiders in there.

breakage of the locker itself. the guy i talked to said that because the teeth on the locker are small they will break off with force applied to it. my 35 inch tires dont help.

hence why he doesnt sell them.

An L/S wouldn't fair any better......

I had a PowerTrax for years in an 8.8 with 36's and never had any issues. You can break anything if you try hard enough but I wasn't necessarily "gentle" with it. I think the lunchbox will be OK if you are on a tight budget but it will never be as strong as the Detroit. If you are thinking about doing a gear change in the near future, I'd go Detroit as you would have to have a gear set-up anyway.

im going to throw in a lunchbox for now. just picked up a ford rear d60 semi float 35 spline shafts $100

You'll probably break axle shafts long before you break the locker. I didn't notice if your planning on putting this in the front or rear, if the front check out Aussie lockers. They are cheaper then lockrights (around $240), milled to higher tolerances, and come with a 2 or 3 year warranty, no limit on tire size, hp, anything, if you break it they give you a new one.

the guy i talked to said that lock rights and the such break very often and often need to be cut out the of the diff they are installed in. hence why they dont sell them.

thoughts?

That's bullshit. My rear LockRight has been in there 9 years and the front 8 years. You have to make sure you use a hardened pin and that your side gear washers are not worn out. They give you a measurement in the instructions--stick a feeler gauge in there to make sure there isn't too much play. I think people slap them in on a 20 year-old axle without checking and are surprised when the pins break or the springs pop out.

My truck isn't mall cruiser. That's a trailer load of black locust I pulled out of the woods. Stuff is much heavier than oak. These lockers have been doing this stuff for almost a decade without a hiccup--and it was a daily driver up until 6 years ago.
