the reason the smith and wesson costs so much is because it's actually an AR15 pattern rifle design scaled down to .22LR, the mossberg, while being a fine firearm, is just a honda civic with a bodykit.
No it isn't, it is still just a .22LR dressed up like an AR with a plastic receiver. The opperating principles are completely different, so really IMO aside from the balance and feel of the gun... as long as they work it doesn't really matter how. They did do a more convicing job though. Kinda depends if you would rather pay for a Honda with a bodykit or a four cylinder Corvette.

The Colt is the same way (made by the same company as the S&W actually) but has a metal receiver. These fake AR's are fun (my brother has a Colt) but don't miss the price of the real deal by much.
The intent of these things is to have something with the same exact feel of an AR for training that shoots something cheaper than what an AR eats.
