just finished putting my dana 35 front end with my JD lift in my 88 b2. front is a 3.73 and i think the back is a 3.73. locker in the front and l/s in the back. well i think i may have the gear ratio off... out in the woods it performs great for 3 bald tires and a good one. but out on the tar mat it feel like the front end is dragging the rear. any ideas on how to check to make sure? was an 88 with an a4ld now has a 5 speed:icon_welder:

You can mark the tire and driveshaft. Give the tire one full turn and count how many times the driveshaft goes around. I had the JY sell me a 4.10 once when I requested a 3.73 - and it was an AWD Explorer. Needless to say, it wasn't happy.

Anyway, this method is how I discovered it was a 4.10 ratio.

I take it neither of them have tags?

EDIT: You will obviously want it jacked up, both tires off the ground for this. Probably need to have the hubs locked for the front too.

I am half tempted to leave my original tags on my F-150 axles when I regear it to 3.73's just to mess with whoever crosses its trail if for whatever reason it ever gets junked. :icon_twisted:

You are going to be careful when you try to measure the wheels. If you measure the tire rotation you are going to have to make sure that all four tires spin evenly. It won't be a problem for the rear but it will depend on what kind of a locker is in the front if it will be locked or not. If only one wheel turns it will turn twice as far as it would if both tires turned.

At least on 8.8" rear ends, you should be able to take the fill plug out and peek inside with a flash light, and most ring gears will have the ratio stamped on them, and just turn the axle till you see it.

you can pull off the diff cover and count the teeth on the ring gear and pinion and then divide them. ring gear teeth / pinon teeth = gear ratio

for example 41 ring gear teeth / 11 pinion teeth = 3.72727272727272727272 or 3.73

and like others have said, sometimes it's written on the the ring gear, but i dont think you could see it through the fill plug.

On the D35 he would have to pull the pig. Tire spin/Driveshaft count would be easiest. If your front is locked though it will feel different than an open. Unless your sure you wasn't locked when driving it on the road.

If your front end is locked, of COURSE it will feel like the ratio's off...

found my problem. one of my tired in the front was a 235/70-15 vs the other 3 that was a 235/75-15:haha: i think my blonde ness was a little to blonde yesterday:icon_thumby:
