Ooooops, that's soft over there

The general rule is don't use TOW straps around trees. Tree saver straps are much stronger. And they don't have flying missiles attached to both ends.

You're one of those morons that wraps your winch cable around trees aren't you? :temper: ALWAYS use a strap when using a tree as a winch point. If you don't you're not only causing damage to the tree, you're causing damage to your winch cable.

Thanks for the benifit of the doubt. lol. I should have got more specific I guess.
Yank straps = long and have strech
Tree saver = short, minimal strech

Do not include a yank strap in your winch line, unless it is around a tree. If in is long, wrap it around the tree more than once.

Are you talking about tow ROPES? The ones with hooks at the ends? Those shouldn't even be used in any recovery process, they were not designed for that use. A proper strap should have loops at the ends, just as a tree saver.

And there is no problem with using a strap as a tree saver, they are not any less strong than a tree saver, and a slow controlled pull is going to see WAY less stress than it is being used to "yank" someone from a stuck spot.

Didn't really mean to insinuate that you are a moron, I just see way too many scars in trees while out wheeling, and it really pisses me off.

And yes, a strap will have twice the capacity when in a u shape (around a tree) than in a straight line pull. (This doesn't mean twice the capacity of the strap, check the ratings of any strap before using it, and if anything, overkill is best)

The most important thing is that EVERYONE is clear of straps and winchlines when attempting a recovery.

I needed to use my snap strap today!!

Rope, strap, whatever you want to call it. They come in both forms. I only have a problem with them because the weight rating on most is pretty low.

I know they're not meant for use around trees, but you KNOW somebody has done it.

Very, very big difference between the two, and the recovery strap can be used around a tree without any problems.
