Only 1st and reverse work

Ok, i am going home to fix my fathers 2001 Ranger 2wd manual 2.5L (It's in Ohio) and only 1st and Reverse work but it takes a little effort to get it into gear. From a little looking online both of those have there own synchro's (correct me if thats wrong). I will have more details once i get home to tear into this. But before hand has anybody had this problem as well?

A Quick history just in-case. The master cylinder slave has been replaced 2 or 3 times, has over 200K miles, 4 people learned to drive stick on it, and did 6x6 atv hauling for a couple of years (that was many years ago though).

Again trying to get yall's experience and advice before i get there so i have a little for-knowledge on this problem.

Update, Once the truck is on (in neutral). It will NOT go into any gear. And if i start it in 1st it lurches forward on start but then settle down, like you start it and forgot to pull it out of gear.

Any ideas? Most definitely the Clutch or the Transmission is the source of the problem. Is there any linkage i can access from the cab around the area of the shifter/shifter boot?

Sounds like air in the clutch hydraulics (not fully releasing the clutch).

Have you checked the clutch fluid reservoir to see if it has fluid?
