If it ain't broke...fix it before it does.
...and the idle in my stock '83 2.0 with a carb went high. Not high as in when you first start the engine and the choke makes the idle high till the truck warms up, high after that. I have no tach in my truck so I won't talk numbers. Idle will settle down from that initial high idle but still is higher than it was before it got really cold. Truck ran fine a week ago. Also truck misses if you are in too high a gear under load, suck as if I rev out the gears, it runs fine and smooth, too low RPM and it misses like crazy. When I am going down hill and drop a gear, that high idle just makes the truck take off and down shifting to come to a stop is a pain too, high idle so the truck dosen't want to slow down. Runs fine at 45-65 MPH just down hills and coming to a stop that high idle concerns me. I haven't got it into the shop yet to really give it a good once over but I'm thinking vac leak. Any input would be great. Has this happened to anyone else?:icon_confused:
 
Could be leaning out. When was the last time the fuel filter got changed or the carb cleaned out/rebuilt?

Fuel filter was changed 2 weeks ago. The carb is likely due for a rebuild.

With the engine running take a can of starting fluid and carefully lightly spray the intake gaskets, the carb ,and carb base. If you spray part of a gasket and the rpm' s go up, then you have found your leak.

this can be done with safer sprays like wd-40, if you use a non flammable spray then the engine rpm' s will slow down when you find your leak.

it could also be a vacuum line/ hose. Maybe cracked/ or broken. I would suspect that if it is a line/ hose, then it would most likely be cracked at one end from the cold stretching it; (this would explain why it started after a cold night)

I'd also say probable vac leak...

I'm thinking, for some reason, a sticking throttle cable...and that's easy enough to check...just disconnect it from the carb and have someone blip the pedal so you can watch the cable travel...could be that it has a broken strand that may be sticking to the inside of the cable sheathing...or binding somewhere...not that I've ever experienced this myself...but something else to check out...

While you are poking around looking for leaks spray some wd-40 on the auto choke linkage and heat riser and make sure its not binding up..
