OldMan2 Ranger Update

I'm starting this thread in hopes that I will have updates on projects for my 1991 Ranger 2.3L. Tonight's post is a new tonneau I mounted. I bought it from RealTruck for $223 delivered. I removed a 10 year old Duraliner drop-in bedliner that is tough as iron and would still make someone a good liner. I think I will have LineX do the bed, sides and top rails enough to cover the paint damage caused by the drop-in. I will then put in a rubber bed floor liner from RealTruck that costs $112 delivered. It will take me a bit of time to get used to the tonneau. I'm a rather gruff fun lovin' old man and I need to convince myself that the tonneau doesn't look too "prissy".

That is a really clean looking 2nd gen. thanks for showing it. I want to add a tonneau to my Ranger as well. if nothing else, it will keep the leaves out of the bed in the fall

Just drive around with the windows and rear slider open. The leaves will soon be on your dash and falling into the defroster vents. (Keep a lid on your coffee cup)

ericphoto.......You touched a nerve with your truck. It reminds me of a '94 Chevy Stepside lifted 4X4 I had. I regret ever selling it. I made a shortcut to your Project page and intend to sit in the morning when all is quiet, with a cup of coffee and see what you have done. You have a fine truck. Good lookin' runnin' buddy too.

That is a pretty nice 2nd Gen you have there. I indeed like the tonneau cover... I just can't help but see it on a set of satin black modulars... white letter out.

What does the future hold for for that little gem?

Eric, how do you like the 3.0L?

It’s ok. Relatively trouble free and tough. I’ve overheated it once or twice with no obvious adverse effects. Just not great on power or low end torque. You have to keep the rpms up. I have dreams of replacing it. But I can’t decide what to put in. If I can’t sell my old Mercedes, the Ranger might get an OM617 and the Mercedes might get an LS and turn into a drag strip car.

What does the future hold for for that little gem?

Uncle Gump, that little gem and I have been runnin' together for 14 years. I'm 72 now, so I hope we can run for another 14. I remember my mother at the age of 90 saying she wanted to borrow a shotgun. When I asked her why, she said...."they ain't takin' my drivers license".

racsan....I looked at your links. It is obvious you are a Ranger fan. Sorry to hear Polar Express was stolen......I hate a thief. As for tractors, I had a 1947 8N and for many years I've had my 1968 Ford 5000. I love the 5000.

Not being familiar with the OM617 I did a quick search.....
"The OM617 engine family is a straight-5 diesel automobile engine from Mercedes-Benz used in the 1970s and 1980s. It is a direct development from the straight-4 OM616. It was sold in vehicles from 1974 to 1991. The OM617 is considered to be one of the most reliable engines ever produced with engines often reaching over 1,000,000 km (620,000 mi) without being rebuilt and is one of the key reasons for Mercedes' popularity in North America in the 1980s, as it was powerful and reliable..."

That should give the Ranger some attitude adjustment. And, a Mercedes drag strip car. That's class!
