I just recently purchased a 1985 Ranger with a 2.8vr and the 5 speed tranny 2wd. It is going to be a v8 conversion eventually. But I would like to keep it carberated and do something just a bit different and go with the older 2 valve 289. I am not looking for performance, just something more streetable. Anyone have any info or websites that others have done?

Hey there Frakchered. Welcome to the site!
Man, have you come to the right place :)
First things first, check out the Technical Library link on the top of the page. Scroll down to the v8 section. Gobs of good info there. Also, use the search function and look for 302 and 351w V8. If nothing else, it will give you some great ideas.

If you have questions after that, then post'em up here and we will get your project rolling!

The main sticking point is the front mounted dipstick on the 289, You will have to swap on an 80's dual sump foxbody oilpan that's got a dipstick in the pan. Then remove the 289's front dipstick tube and plug the hole. The 289's front sump oil pan will not fit a Ranger crossmember. The fox body dual sump is the only pan that will, that's readily available.

Any clue on how different is the 289 cover oil dip stick tube location from this 5.0L Ford Racing conversion timing cover?

It's the same. I drilled a mid 80's cover for the dipstick, on my 331 when I swapped it into the 77 Comet. If you'll look at the pic, you can see the dipstick boss on the lower right hand corner.

It was just sort of my understanding that the dual sump pans with the oil dipstick hole in the pan were kind of harder to find.

There's a Ford racing kit with a dual sump foxbody pan, that timing cover above, and the dipstick w/ tube (and some other parts). The 80's dual sump pans are a dime a dozen. But essentially, it's a dipstick tube to work with timing covers with dipstick provision that are using a foxbody pan.

I have the kit minus the timing cover, I bought it cheap for the pan, pickup tube, and reverse flow water pump. My old pan was pretty rusty under the paint and I am converting to reverse flow with a different timing cover. I am using the stock location in the block for dipstick.

I have no intentions of using the dipstick or tube, but it is brand new. I have no clue if it would fit, but would work in theory. I would be willing to sell it pretty cheap. Also can take pics and measurments.

Here's the kit I am referring to:

The dipstick tube Fox pan can be bought at your local parts house, someone here or on the RPS forum posted this gem of info in the last few months. If I'm not mistaken, Advance Auto has these pans. The dipstick tube in the Ford kit fits the later dipstick holed blocks, not the pan or timing cover

If you have a dual sump pan, you must have a pan mounted dipstick. You cant get a correct oil level reading from the front sump. Its got to be from the rear. The front sump is just for oil pump clearance, not for oil accumulation.
