I did'nt know where else to post this thread so I hope it's ok here as my Ranger is a 4-banger.

About 2-3 months ago my fuel pump went out so I replaced it. I did'nt buy the whole assembly because they did'nt stock it and it would take 3 days to get. I can't afford downtime with my truck.

Anyways, when I installed the new pump it was kind of cockeyed and whenever the fuel gauge would get to 1/4 tank or less fuel would sometimes not get to the pump properly. Depending on what hill or which way I was turning. I would have to wait for fuel to come back to the pump. Two days ago while going down hill the truck died and left everyone behind me honking and going around me. EMBARRASSING!!!!!

I decided I needed to re-remove the assembly and fix the problem. I just did this about an hour ago. The problem is, is that the filter that attaches to the bottom of the pump is left out because I could'nt remove it without damaging the lock ring. There is another filter downstream on the framerail so Iwas hoping I would be ok?

Sorry for being such a long post but I need this problem gone! Thanks!

well the reason that one is on the pump is to protect the pump itself from big stuff. The inline filter protects the injectors and what not from smaller debris. I would put a filter on it no question about it.

It is recommended but, the truck will run just fine without it. You may however experience shorter pump life. They didn't give you a new one with the pump?

Thier sold seperatly.

Yeah I bought one with the new pump because they would'nt warranty it without one.

The problem I have is I had to remove it to correct a problem and it would no longer go on correctly. It seems to be working fine for now, but the real test will be when the fuel tank starts to get low. Then I'll see if it's positioned right and able to pick up fuel properly.

I'll get another filter soon though. I know it's there for a reason. Thanks for the replies!

I do alot of tune ups on many different vehicles. The one that gets me are the new dodges. They don't have an inline filter, only the sock that is on the bottom of the pump in the tank. They say that is the filter for the system. So I would say if when you put the pump in and you did the sock at the same time you should be good as long as the sock doesn't fall off.
